At Stone House, we’re all about proper, authentic flavour-packed food created from the finest local ingredients – seasonal dishes made using the best Yorkshire produce and crafted with passion.
To help you plan your visit, we’ve pulled together answers to the questions we get asked most – from opening hours and dietary options to what’s on the menu this week.
Can’t find what you’re after? Just give us a call – we’re always happy to help!
Our restaurant is open daily and welcomes you for all the good stuff – a hearty breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or a relaxed supper.
Breakfast: 8am – 9.15am
Lunch: 12pm – 2.30pm
Dinner: 6.30pm – 8pm
We also keep the cake stands stacked and serve tray bakes, sweet treats, and delicious tea and coffee all day long.
Absolutely! The restaurant and bar are open to everyone - whether you’re here for a proper meal, a tipple by the fire, or just great coffee and a chat, you're more than welcome to join us.
Walk-ins are welcome, but do give us a ring ahead if you’d like to book a spot – particularly if the sun’s out and the terrace is extra-tempting!
If you're staying with us, we’ll always reserve you a table for dinner – just let us know what time you would like to dine at check-in. If you'd prefer to head elsewhere to eat, we completely understand - we’d just ask that you let us know in advance so that we can release the table to other diners.
For non-residents, we highly recommend booking ahead (especially over weekends or in the busier months) to make sure we can squeeze you in.
Of course – just let us know ahead of time and we’ll make sure the kitchen has you covered. Whether you're vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, or have other dietary needs, we’ll do our best to whip up something you’ll love.
Yes, you can – and we’ll always try our best to make it happen. Just mention any preferences when booking and we’ll do what we can to seat you just where you’d like.
Yes, of course. Our current lunch and Afternoon Tea menus are available on our dine page
Dinner is more of a moveable feast – our evening menu changes daily based on what’s fresh and what’s good. We’re happy to send over that evening’s menu or give you a flavour of what to expect if you get in touch.
Yes, we do – and they make a lovely present for food-lovers. Whether it’s for a special occasion or just because, our dining vouchers can be used for lunch, dinner, or Afternoon Tea. Available to buy online or at reception.
Nothing too fancy – we’re all about relaxed, country comfort. Smart-casual works best (think shoes rather than flip-flops, and shirts instead of sportswear). Come as you are – just no dressing gowns, please!
Four-legged friends are welcome in the private dining room, bar, Oak Room lounge, garden, and in dog-friendly bedrooms - but not in the restaurant. Lunch and Afternoon Tea can be served in these areas too, so your pup doesn’t have to miss out. Do let us know in advance if you’re bringing your pooch so we can make sure tails are wagging all round.
We do! From stargazing suppers and wine tastings to our much-loved Murder Mystery evenings and seasonal feasts, there’s always something happening. Check our website or chat to reception to see what’s coming up – and don’t miss our events during the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival.
Want priority access and discounted tickets? Then sign up to our newsletter below and be the first to know.
Absolutely – we love a celebration! Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or something else worth toasting, we’ll help you mark the moment.
Ask us about our private dining room too – it’s perfect for small, intimate get-togethers (up to 8 guests). Just let us know it’s a special occasion when booking, and we’ll be happy to discuss the options with you.
We do indeed – carefully curated and full of character, with wines from small producers around the world and a few standout English vineyards too.
Need a suggestion? Just ask – our team is always happy to help you find the perfect bottle.
Our wine list is lovely, but if you have a special bottle you'd like to bring, that's no problem – we just charge a corkage fee. Best to let us know in advance.
We do – and it’s rather lovely. Think freshly baked scones, delicate sandwiches, and sweet treats using the best Yorkshire produce.
Afternoon Tea is available by reservation only, and does get booked up quickly – particularly at weekends – so do call as far ahead as possible to secure your slot.
Yes, weather permitting! Our terrace and garden offer beautiful spots for a relaxed lunch or Afternoon Tea with a view of the Yorkshire Dales. Perfect for sunny days and long, lazy afternoons.

In memory of Peter Taplin, whose vision helped shape Stone House into the place so many of us know and love today.
In the 1980s, Peter and Jane Taplin made the bold decision to transform a private country house into a hotel – opening its doors to the world and creating something truly unique. More than 40 years on, that same spirit of warmth and genuine Yorkshire hospitality continues to shape what makes Stone House so special.
Alongside Peter’s son, Chris – who had asked if we could create a lasting tribute to his father here at Stone House – Joe and Holly suggested this plaque and wording to be placed on “the bench” – a spot many guests will appreciate for its magnificent views over the Wensleydale Valley.
Chris shared that it was likely this very view that sealed the decision for Peter and Jane to buy Stone House when they visited the property in June 1980 – a sentiment that we, and no doubt many of those who have visited the hotel and sat on this bench, will completely understand.
We hope that this small gesture pays tribute to the enduring impact Peter and Jane have had on Stone House, and that their family can feel how strongly their legacy lives on in its ethos today. This beautiful old house remains a place to be welcomed warmly, to unwind, and to feel at home.
With love from the Hobson family and all at Stone House x

A huge thank you to @muddystilettos for their wonderful review.
They’ve perfectly captured what makes a stay at Stone House so special, from our warm welcome to our comfort and character, in the heart of the Dales.
We’re so grateful for such thoughtful words that reflect the experience we aim to create for all our guests: a relaxed country house stay, surrounded by beautiful scenery, great food, and genuine hospitality.
If you haven’t read it yet, you can take a look at their blog and see our hotel through their eyes.
