Step Into the Past at Bolton Castle

Step Into the Past at Bolton Castle

Tucked into the hills just 25 minutes from Stone House, Bolton Castle is one of those places that feels like it’s stood still in time – in the best possible way.

Step Into the Past at Bolton Castle

Built in 1379 and still owned by the same family, this is a true medieval fortress—complete with winding staircases, grand chambers, and centuries of history etched into every corner.

Mary, Queen of Scots was once held here (with her entourage of 30, no less), and the castle has staged its fair share of drama both in real life and on screen—film lovers may recognise it from Elizabeth and Ivanhoe. It’s that rare blend of history, scenery, and hands-on charm, making it just as appealing for families as it is for curious wanderers.

What to See and Do

  • Soak up the stories – From royal plots to daily medieval life, every stone here has a tale to tell.
  • Get stuck in – Archery, falconry, wild boar feeding… this isn’t your usual hands-off castle tour.
  • Wander the gardens – A maze, an orchard, and a beautifully kept medieval garden to lose an hour (or two) in.
  • Climb to the top – The views from the ramparts stretch right across Wensleydale. Well worth the legwork.
  • Step inside – The Great Chamber, dungeon, and solar (the medieval version of a snug) are all open to explore.

Just a 25-minute drive from us, Bolton Castle makes for a brilliant day out. Ask at reception for directions, opening times, or tips on other hidden gems nearby
